Google Scholar is obedient, not smart.
It does exactly what you type, not what you mean. Learn five little symbols and one recipe, and it finds what you mean.
Example question: how can a gedragsspecialist support the behaviour that learning stands on?
The pillars in this example are attention, motivation, self-regulation and executive function: the behaviours learning stands on. Swap in your own topic and the same trick works.
Vijf symbolen. Dat is je hele gereedschapskist.
Denk aan pizza. Groen is de stapel resultaten die overblijft.
AND
“Ik wil pizza AND ananas. Allebei, graag.”
Beide woorden moeten in het artikel staan. De stapel resultaten wordt kleiner.
zelfregulatie AND leerlingen
Een spatie betekent al AND in Scholar. Zelf AND typen maakt vooral je eigen gedachtegang zichtbaar.
OR
“Bank OR sofa. Maakt niet uit welke.”
Beide woorden zijn goed. De stapel wordt groter. Gebruik dit voor woorden die hetzelfde betekenen.
leerlingen OR pupils
Altijd in HOOFDLETTERS. Een kleine “of” is gewoon een woord.
Min
"executieve functies"
Haakjes
“Een doosje.”
Stop synoniemen in één doosje, zodat OR en AND niet door elkaar lopen.
(leerlingen OR pupils) AND aandacht
Five symbols. That is the whole toolbox.
Think pizza. Green is the pile of results you keep.
AND
“I want pizza AND pineapple. Both, please.”
Both words must be in the paper. The pile of results gets smaller.
"self-regulation" AND pupils
A space already means AND in Scholar. Writing AND just makes your thinking visible.
OR
“Sofa OR couch. I do not mind which.”
Any of these words is fine. The pile gets bigger. Use it for words that mean the same thing.
behaviour OR behavior
Always in CAPITAL letters. A small “or” is just a word.
Minus
“Pizza, but no anchovies.”
Papers with this word go in the bin. Great for getting rid of the wrong kind of “behaviour”.
"learning behaviour" -animal
The minus touches the word: -animal, not – animal.
Quotes
“Glue.”
Words inside quotes stay together, in that order. Without glue, Scholar may find papers about the executive of a company and the function of a kidney.
"executive function"
Brackets
“A box for words that belong together.”
Put the look-alikes in one box, so OR and AND do not get mixed up.
(pupils OR children) AND attention
Het recept: bouw een toren van blokken
Elke goede zoekopdracht is dezelfde toren. Je verandert alleen de woorden.
-
Kies 2 of 3 hoofdideeën
Zeg je vraag hardop. Omcirkel de woorden die de lading dekken. Elk wordt een blok. De kleine woorden (hoe, kan, de) laat je weg.
-
Vul elk blok met synoniemen
Vraag jezelf af: hoe zeggen anderen dit? Voeg andere spellingen toe (behaviour en behavior), andere talen (gedragsspecialist) en andere namen (pupils, students, children).
-
Klik de blokken aan elkaar
OR binnen een blok. AND tussen blokken. Zet haakjes om elk blok. Lijm woordgroepen vast met aanhalingstekens.
Teken dit eerst op papier en vul de lege plekken in. Voeg meer OR-woorden toe als je ze hebt. Open daarna de bouwer hieronder en typ ze in.
The recipe: build a tower of blocks
Every good search is the same tower. You only change the words.
-
Pick 2 or 3 big ideas
Say your question out loud. Circle the words that carry it. Each one becomes a block. The little words (how, can, the) stay out.
-
Fill each block with look-alikes
Ask: how else do people say this? Add other spellings (behaviour and behavior), other languages (gedragsspecialist) and other names (pupils, students, children).
-
Snap the blocks together
OR inside a block. AND between blocks. Put a bracket box around each block. Glue two-word phrases with quotes.
Draw this on paper first and fill in the blanks. Add more OR words if you have them. Then open the builder below and type them in.
Bouw je zoekopdracht
Typ de woorden. De bouwer voegt de symbolen toe, en met één knop zoek je in Google Scholar.
Typ een woord en druk op Enter (of een komma). Voeg zoveel synoniemen toe als je kunt. Twee woorden in één chip worden automatisch met aanhalingstekens gelijmd. Je hoeft geen OR of AND te typen.
Vastgelopen? Te veel of te weinig resultaten?
Goed nieuws: experts doen 5 tot 10 zoekopdrachten voor één vraag. Een slecht eerste resultaat betekent dat je instructie een tweak nodig heeft. Het betekent niet dat je iets fout deed.
Te veel resultaten
Het pizzafeestje is te groot. Maak de zoekopdracht kieskeuriger.
- ANDVoeg een blok toeVoeg wie of waar toe:
AND (leerlingen OR pupils) - “ ”Lijm de woordgroep vast
"executieve functies"in plaats van twee losse woorden. - MinGooi de ruis weg
-animal -rats - JarenBeperk de jarenGebruik het jaarfilter in de bouwer, of “Sinds…” in Scholar’s linkermenu.
- TitelZoek alleen in de titelScholar-menu, Advanced search, “in the title of the article”. De titel zegt het meest over waar een artikel echt over gaat.
Te weinig resultaten
Het bord is leeg. Maak de zoekopdracht vriendelijker.
- ORVoeg synoniemen toe
behaviour OR behavior, leerlingen OR pupils - WegVerwijder het zwakste blokDrie keer AND is veel. Houd de twee belangrijkste ideeën over.
- “ ”Maak de lijm losserLange woordgroepen komen weinig voor. Probeer twee kortere.
- SpellingControleer de spellingBrits of Amerikaans (behaviour, behavior). Nederlandse en Engelse woorden mogen samen in één OR-blok.
- ResetWis de filtersElk jaar, elke taal, en kijk opnieuw.
Stuck? Too many results or too few?
Good news: experts run 5 to 10 searches for one question. A bad first result means your instruction needs a tweak. It does not mean you did something wrong.
Too many results
The pizza party is too big. Make the search pickier.
- ANDAdd a blockAdd who or where:
AND (pupils OR children) - “ ”Glue the phrase
"executive function"instead of two loose words. - MinusThrow the noise out
-animal -rats - YearsLimit the yearsUse the year filter in the builder, or “Since…” in Scholar’s left menu.
- TitleSearch the title onlyScholar menu, Advanced search, “in the title of the article”. Titles say what a paper is really about.
Too few results
The plate is empty. Make the search friendlier.
- ORAdd look-alikes
behaviour OR behavior, pupils OR students - DropRemove the weakest blockThree ANDs are a lot. Keep the two ideas that matter most.
- “ ”Loosen the glueLong phrases are rare. Try two shorter ones.
- SpellCheck spellingBritish or American (behaviour, behavior). Dutch and English words can share one OR box.
- ResetClear the filtersAny year, any language, then look again.
Tips en trucs
Vier dingen die vaak misgaan. Probeer ze meteen uit in Google Scholar zelf.
- LetterlijkTyp geen hele zinScholar leest elk los woord als AND. Kies 2 of 3 hoofdwoorden uit je vraag, niet de hele vraag.
- “ ”Lijm woordgroepen vast“gedrag leren” zonder aanhalingstekens vindt ook ratten en shoppers. Gebruik
"learning behaviour". - StapelenNiet te veel AND’sZes woorden achter elkaar met alleen spaties vindt bijna niets. Zet synoniemen in OR-blokken.
- ( )Zonder haakjes loopt het door elkaar
executive function OR self regulation AND childrenis dubbelzinnig voor Scholar. Gebruik aanhalingstekens én haakjes.
Tips and tricks
Four things that often go wrong. Try them straight away in Google Scholar itself.
- LiteralDon’t type a full sentenceScholar reads every loose word as AND. Pick 2 or 3 key words from your question, not the whole question.
- “ ”Glue word groups together“behaviour learning” without quotes also finds rats and shoppers. Use
"learning behaviour". - StackingDon’t stack too many ANDsSix words in a row with only spaces finds almost nothing. Put look-alikes in OR blocks.
- ( )Without brackets it gets muddled
executive function OR self regulation AND childrenis ambiguous to Scholar. Use quotes and brackets together.
